As seen on

It can snag your time, ruin your photos and cramp your style on vacation: wrinkled clothes.

Depending on accommodations and trip itineraries, there may or may not be time to deal with creased clothes while traveling. Looking sharp on the road isn’t impossible and doesn’t have to be troublesome – if you pack strategically.

“If you’re away from home, you might not have access to the same tools you’d normally use to fix the issue, so it’s best to think ahead and pack clothing that won’t easily wrinkle,” said Lindsay Weiner, a certified image consultant and former assistant stylist on TLC’s show, “What Not to Wear.”

Weiner is also the founder of StyleMeAsap.com - a company focused on helping people stylize and organize their wardrobes. She says knowing what to or what not to pack will either scrunch up or smooth out your wardrobe options on vacation.

Materials and Brands to Pack

Picking clothing made of the right type of material can make a huge difference in terms of how well the items will travel.

“Knits are often the best option for travel because they are lightweight and less likely to wrinkle,” Weiner said. “Anything with stretch in it is also perfect for travel because the Lycra helps the garment keep its shape and prevents it from wrinkling when the item is packed.”

Non-iron or wrinkle-resistant clothing is also a good option. Even though those items might become slightly creased while traveling, a quick spritz of water and a few minutes in a steamy bathroom can fix those lines quickly.

“There are also brands such as Travelsmith, Chico’s and J.Jill that have clothes specifically designed for travel, so wrinkles won’t be an issue with these garments,” Weiner said. “For men, Brooks Brothers, Charles Tyrwhitt, and Banana Republic all have good and varied selections of ‘no iron’ shirts and pants that are not only perfect for everyday wear, but also travel.”

Fashion experts say non-iron clothes are pre-treated to create the wrinkle-free effect. In turn, those items might require more gentle washing to retain the smooth look.

“The finish will wear off if dried with fabric softeners or if treated with specific chemicals, so people should make sure they consult their dry-cleaner about this if they send them out,” said Natalie Holloway, the co-founder of Buttoned Up Style - a New York City-based image consulting and personal shopping firm.

A wrinkle-resistant look can also be found in fashion apparel made with bamboo-blended fabrics.

From hoodies to dresses, the Aventura Clothing line features a selection of items made with rayon from bamboo.

“Although they may wrinkle some when packed, the wrinkles fall out relatively easily,” said Kathleen Williamson, the head merchandiser at Aventura Clothing. “I think what makes them great travel pieces are the fact that they are so comfortable and multi-functional; they can be worn during the day as a casual outfit, or dressed up with great accessories for a night out. Bamboo naturally has wonderful wicking properties and is partially antimicrobial – two things that are great for humid climates.”

For women who don’t want to think about which items to pack or coordinate together on vacation, the “Chick On the Go” travel wardrobe is an easy alternative. Designers of the fashion line say the seven piece combination, which includes five garments and two accessories, can create 25 different outfit combinations from loungewear to elegant social attire.

“Chick On The Go allows women to have an entire packed wardrobe at their fingertips,” said Cheryl Filkowski, the co-founder of Chick on the Go. “No need to stress over packing, no over-packing, no cumbersome luggage, no baggage fees and no possibility to arrive at your destination without your luggage. While other companies have travel friendly clothing, no one has a a whole coordinating wardrobe packed and ready to go.

“In addition, our garments do not need to be ironed or steamed. Just simply hang the garments after unpacking and wear… This allows for great recovery, stretchability and comfort.”

Putting it in the Suitcase

Instead of folding buttoned-up shirts and similar items that you would never put in a drawer at home, try rolling the items before packing them in your bag.

“Doing this is gentler on clothes and eliminates the creases caused by folding and it’s also a great space saver,” Weiner said. “Wrapping clothes in plastic dry cleaning bags is also an excellent way to avoid wrinkles, as the plastic reduces the friction that causes the problem.”

Treating Clothes on Vacation

It’s not just about buying the right type of clothes or packing the proper way. After arriving at your destination, try to unpack and hang up your vacation wardrobe promptly.

“If your clothes have become wrinkled in your luggage, the downward pull of hanging up the items should fix it,” Weiner said. “For more intense wrinkles, turn your bathroom into a steamer. Hang the garment in a place that it won’t get wet, then turn the shower on and make it as hot as possible. Shut the door and leave the water going for about 5-15 minutes. The room will get steamy and remove the wrinkles from the item.”

If you’re looking for a little extra help with getting rid of those lines and want to avoid using an iron, consider packing the Downy Wrinkle Releaser spray. It is available in a travel size bottle. To use, simply spray the clothing item, shake it or pull gently to release the wrinkles.

“Combine this with the shower technique, and wrinkled clothes will definitely be a thing of the past,” Weiner said.

AOL Shopping

Vacation is just the best, isn’t it? It’s probably one of life’s greatest gifts to the overworked and weary. The only problem is, the logistics involved can be a real pain in the rear. Remembering to pack everything to get out of the house and over to the airport in time to get through all the heightened-security checkpoints and catch that flight before it leaves you behind with new arrangements to figure out and additional fees to pay can really frazzle even the most put-together girl. Add in the likelihood of losing your checked baggage to some far-off destination in the wrong direction, and the thought of vacation can start to feel like a regrettable decision that hasn’t even happened yet.

There’s not much you can do about the traffic you’re likely to hit on the way to the airport, or the long, slow lines at security checkpoints, but there’s certainly a way to avoid the headache of finding yourself without a change of clothes because the airline lost your luggage. You can even avoid the long baggage check lines. All you need is Chick on the Go – amazingly, it’s a whole wardrobe in a bag that’s about the size of a handbag. When I first heard about this relatively new product discovered by a traveling woman who herself has had experience with the frustration of luggage delay, I was intrigued and had to try it out for myself. Lost luggage is a real problem; as is over-packing or missed flights due to ridiculous waits in baggage check lines. Chick on the Go ($199) is a more cost-effective way to ensure you’re always properly packed for your vacations and business trips, and if you do lose any checked luggage, that you won’t have to spend a fortune on buying entirely new outfits for the occasion.

I went with XS or Size 0-2 (sizes available up to 20) and quickly discovered the genius of the product. There are five essential pieces (a white tank, a white long-sleeve V-neck shirt, a black slip dress, a pair of black wide-leg pants, a black poncho) and two accessory pieces (a black sash and a white sash) that you can mix and match into at least 25 different outfits. Of course, you can always discover more depending on how creative you are about assembling outfits! All these pieces come in a pretty garment bag that unrolls to expose zippered compartments and a hook hanger. It’s very convenient! The kit also comes with a folded pamphlet (laminated for accident-free instruction!) showing you all the 25 standard outfits you can assemble for different events using the five articles of clothing and two sashes. The outfits range from more business-appropriate to more casual lounging to flirty outfits for daytime excursions and even a few options for spending a night out on the town.

On the day I first received the Chick on the Go kit, I tried out all of the 25 outfits – one after the other. I also dedicated at least 5-10 minutes moving around in each of the looks to see how practical they were for activity. My first thought was that the material was very light and stretchy. It was soft and smooth, and it felt cool against the skin. I loved how breezy and comfortable it felt. The only issue was fit. While the XS was perfect girth-wise, at just under 5-feet tall, I had trouble with the proportions. The tank, pants and dress were too long. The poncho hit a little too low. So, for many of the outfits, I looked like a little girl who had just raided her mother’s closet. However, I did find a few looks that worked well for my more miniature frame. These are some of my favorite looks that, with a little hemming, work for my body type:

There were far many more that I liked but just could not fill out or fit as well. I also found a few cute outfits that I wish could’ve functioned better. All of the outfits that involved wearing the poncho as a strapless top and instructed you to use a sash to accent the top of it didn’t stay up very well. Not only did I feel the poncho slipping lower with each step (maybe a little more elastic is needed here), but I could also feel the sash slipping and loosening, too. Tying the sash to help hold up anything never worked out — even with the help of my “wardrobe assistant” (the best friend). That’s the other thing. A good number of these outfits are simple enough to do yourself (and with the help of a full-length mirror), but a handful are tricky to get right unless you’ve had mucho practice or have a willing participant. Here’s a sampling of those trickier looks:

Overall, I am a fan of the Chick on the Go. It’s totally worth it for women who often travel whether for business or for pleasure. Bring it along as a back-up plan or even as the only thing to wear for your entire vacation. It’s versatile, it’s comfy, it’s stylish and it saves you time, money and frustration in the long-run. Now, if they could just release a petite size for shorties like me…

Visit Chick on the Go’s official website for a closer look at the 25 outfits and for instructional videos on how to build the look! Very helpful.

As seen in

Like countless other travelers, Silvia Allegrini arrived at the baggage carousel to discover her luggage had gone in a different direction than she had.

And like countless other travelers, she was forced to run out and buy stop-gap clothing she neither particularly wanted nor needed, while waiting for her belongings to catch up with her.

But unlike countless other travelers, Allegrini set to work finding a solution. The former New York makeup-store owner turned designer has devised a “kit” consisting of five clothing items and two accessories that can be mixed and matched to create 25 distinct outfits. The $199 Chick on the Go ensemble comes in a compact multi-pocketed case and weighs just four pounds. Inside are five black and white garments in an ultra light-weight rayon and spandex blend. The pieces include black, wide-leg pants; a black slip dress; a white long-sleeve shirt; a white tank top; and a black poncho that can double as a skirt or shirt, plus one black and one white cloth belt.

PHOTOS: Check out the different outfits

The button-less, zipper-less pieces claim to fit all body types, but if you’re under 5-feet, 7-inches or so, you’ll need to get the pants shortened. And though Allegrini says they’ll work for all body types (the clothes come in five sizes ranging from extra small to extra large), we wonder how forgiving the sheer fabric would be on a plus-size woman.

They looked great on our slim, 5-foot-7-inch tester and in some instances, her interpretations of the suggested ensembles looked better than those pictured in the promotional material. Our model created 24 of the 25 looks (she declined to attempt the one that pairs a belt, worn as a bandeau top, with the poncho, worn as a skirt). Of the 24 outfits, all but two — both involving the poncho — got a nod from her.

Readers, what’s your strategy for getting maximum mileage out of a minimalist travel wardrobe?
